The film which is set against the backdrop of a jail showcases Farhan Akhtar aka Kishen Mohan Girhotra who aspires to become a singer. Kishen's world turns upside down when he is falsely accused of a murder and is sent to Lucknow Central jail, Kishen Mohan Girhotra played by Farhan Akhtar is an aspiring singer who idolizes Manoj Tiwari in the small town of Moradabad in Uttar Pradesh. Kishen's world turns upside down when he is falsely accused of a murder and is sent to Lucknow Central jail.

The innocent man is further exposed to the cruelties and realities of a jail. One of the highlighted scenes of the movie that’s making round is a band competition being announced in the jail, Kishen drafts a risky plan to escape. He along with his jail inmates that he befriends form a band with the help of an NGO activist Gayatri Kashyap played by Diana Penty, rendering as a catalyst that helps the Lucknow Central jail members to escape and the film showcases Gippy Grewal playing the role of Parminder Singh Trehan who is one of the members of the band formed in jail.The wing consists of a band called Healing Hearts formed by 12 men who have been sentenced life imprisonment. The band plays hit Bollywood numbers at weddings, private functions, and even baarats. 

On the social media front, many announcement and revelations were done about the highlights and essences of the movie, the prominent of all was when Farhan Akhtar took to Twitter to introduce the audience to the strict and straightforward co star Gayatri Kashyap aka Diana Penty playing an important role in this movie. 

While the trailer gave us glimpses of Gayatri, Farhan Akhtar took to Twitter to draw a clear character sketch of his co star.The video showcases Farhan Akhtar talking about Gayatri as a hot headed person who gets things done according to her will. The video further shows montages from the film establishing the character. Gayatri Kashyap is an idealistic woman who works on her principles and does not shy away from speaking her mind. She does not believe in being oppressed to pressure and is ready to revolt if needed. The strong minded woman is the connection between the world inside and outside the jail for Kishen and his friends.

The image described Gayatri Kashyap as headstrong, adamant and straightforward, which is pretty evident in the video.

This intense drama film 'Lucknow Central' is based on a real story. Director Ranjit Tiwari found the inspiration from the real Lucknow Central jail wherein the Adarsh Jail wing music prevails as this has been inspired by a true story. He came across the band through an article which inspired him to make a movie on them. Recalling it the director said, "Around three years ago, I read an article about an annual day program and music competition, started by the state government for jail inmates as an initiative for their reformation. Six to seven central jails in Uttar Pradesh participated in the contest. The idea blew my mind and I discussed it with director Nikhil Advani, who I was assisting at that time.Eventually, he and Farhan (Akhtar) joined hands for the project".
